After deliberating for years about my ability to change the 28 way motherboard to front panel connector on my 10 year old K3 for a gold plated one, I finally plucked up the courage and did the job in about 2 hours. Elecraft supplied me with a replacement connector some years ago. I have to say it was a lot easier than I expected and hopefully will now perform without all sorts of random faults being displayed and regular removal and re-fitting of the front panel.
So if, like me, you are not sure about doing the job, remove the front panel and top and front bottom panels to give maximum access. Remove the old connector by snipping the plastic between each pin one at a time, use a solder sucker and hold the pin while removing it with a small croc clip. When they are all out, clean solder out of all the holes with fine solder-wick braid and flux. The new connector should then push into place. Re-solder on the opposite side of the board to the connector and the solder will flow through and around each pin. My K3 appears to be working perfectly now, so am hoping it will now stay that way! 73, Tom G3OLB ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
