This. I have spent enough time fightingg "prolific" cables that proved to have fake chips that it is far cheaper to just buy the keyspan unit, install the ftdi driver, and have it Just Work (modulo variability in Port naming).
Chuck the prolifics, get a genuine ftdi (the keyspan unit is a great choice). Save the grief.
