I had the same thing happen with my KPA1500 recently and just sent it back to Elecraft for repair. It is there now. I was able to use the Ethernet connection to connect to the Remote SW but that does no good when I need to update the firmware or use the Utility Program which can only be done via the USB port for some reason. I did the same thing as you and tried several different computers and made sure I had the correct FTDI drivers installed but for some reason the KPA1500 would not generate the virtual com port like it used to.
I'll post to the reflector what the fix was once they get back to me.
