My great-aunt Lorraine was born in 1897. She left her home in AR at age 16 to 
become a teacher on the Navajo reservation in western NM. Around the time of 
her 90th birthday party in 1987 (she lived to 102), I was fortunate to spend an 
afternoon talking with her. She told me that when she and her husband had a 
ranch here in NM in the '20s and '30s, they carried a "barbed-wire telephone" 
in their Model T to summon help when the car broke down.
 
I thought that was really clever!
