The AX-line, including the AX1, AX2, and various accessories, is intended to make casual/ad-hoc operation so easy that everyone does it a lot more. It worked on me :)
As noted in the instruction manuals, a longer and/or higher antenna is great if you have the time and materials available to put one up.
