I do it differently. I power the K3 (now K4) _and_ the KAT500 from a single Alinco DM330MV power supply. Whenever the power supply is on, the rig and the KAT are both powered, but the rig doesn't need to be switched on.

It seems like you could do the same thing with your two rigs. Turn on the power supply, then choose the rig you want to use. No need to turn on the K3 just to power the KAT500.

One other consideration: The K3's 12 VDC output is rated for 1 amp, and the KAT500 specs say it draws a maximum of 1 amp. I'd be wary of being that close to the limit.

Bottom line: You can't go wrong if you power all equipment from the power supply.
