Bill, I had a similar problem but solved it by carving out part of the side of the tripod platform to accommodate the bnc connector extending downward. The tripod still holds a camera if necessary.

So a smaller in diameter tripod top plate is needed. I would like a tripod tat would extend to 3 or more feet.
