It turns out that while Yamaha has discontinued the CM-500
headset-microphone as a retail item, It is still being manufactured as an
accessory for a Yamaha LC4 music learning system. This is a system where all
the students in the classroom wear a headset and the teacher can talk to
everyone at once, or converse with individual students, similar to the
language learning labs many of us sat in back in high school.

A large music distributor, sweetwater.com, sells the Yamaha language
learning system and has occasionally had CM-500s available at a reasonable
price. I bought one there not too long ago. Their website is not currently
showing the headset as available, but you might try giving them a call. The
salesperson who assisted me was named Ritchie. I have no relationship with
the firm other than being an occasional customer.

What are hams going to do when their CM-500's break?

Are you sure that the mic was DOA? It has an electret microphone which
requires voltage to work.

I ordered a Yamaha CM-500 from Amazon but it came through some other company
after waiting eight days and there were problems.

1. The original factory packaging was gone.
2. It came wound in bubble wrap, then stuffed into a cardboard box that had
been cut down from a larger box and taped together.
3. There was no manual.
4. The mic was dead.

I'm betting it was a DOA return item that was then sent out to me thinking I
wouldn't notice or I'd think returning it was too much trouble.

On top of that, they've been out of manufacture for quite some time so all
that the stores have are the dregs.

So now I open again for other suggested headsets in the $100 range. The
CM500 was a gaming headset so that could be a source. This is going to be a
gift for a friend who badly needs something.

Any more ideas?

Cheers.
