I welcome the moves by Elecraft to make their kits lead-free and ROHS compliant. The legislation probably already means they are legal in their old versions as it only applies to equipment 'placed on the market' after the law came into effect this July.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on the issue of where and where you cannot use leaded solder. There was an excellent article in the July/August 'Technology @ Home' magazine (http://www.technology-at-home.co.uk/) which attempted to clarify the situation.

The legislation currently applies to Europe only, but will probably be worldwide sometime.

Basically items manufactured/marketted before July 2006 can continue to be assembled/repaired with leaded solder. In fact because of the uncertainty of mixing solders and components this is the recommended approach.

Items sold/marketted later must have been made to use lead free solder and components, and lead free solder MUST be used unless there are exemptions. I am not sure whether kits and home construction is exempt, that seems to be a grey area.

Whether constructors this side of the pond should use lead free to assemble their new K2s is uncertain. There are indeed strong reasons to carry on using leaded because of the difficulty in rework. As pointed out by Wayne, lead free solder has a huge price differential, it costs 3-4 times the price of normal solder, and that in itself is a big enough incentive not to use it unless you really have to!

As it happens I am currently assembling K2 #4848 for a local amateur. This of course was kitted over a year ago so I am using normal solder. I may be posting regarding this when I get a bit further down the assembly line...

Finally, with a major life event a pleasant memory and
the sale of my TV, K2 #4455 has been started. I
completed the Control Board last night. If things go
well, may even have it finished before the honeymoon.

Also had the opportunity to use my Hakko desoldering
tool for the first time (on a different project) I
must say it is SWEEEEET! Wish I had this years ago...

Hope conditions are decent for the YO DX Test, want to
play with the SteppIr some more. Need to set up the
interface to the K2.

If anyone is looking, I have HyGain 205BA (5 el 20M)
and 105BA (5 el 10M) with stainless hardware available
for sale or trade. Just remember it's always best to
sell 10M antennas at the bottom of the cycle ;o)

Hi Bill,

When you did your resistance checks for the front panel board, were any of them outside of the expected range on the low side?

I got to the first test stage tonight and while the rig came on with no smoke there is nothing on the LCD display. I hear the relays clicking and the backlight is on but no characters at all. The front panel is plugged in fine and I reset it just to make sure. Dittos for the control board. All the intermediate resistance checks were. Any input as to where to start looking would be appreciated!

Thanks and 73,

Bill NZ0T

Bill,

One often repeated error in assembly is failure to solder pin 1 of the Front
Panel U1 socket - result is a blank display.

Peer carefully under the LCD and backlight assembly and see if pin 1 is
soldered.
If it is not soldered, therre is a way to solder it without removing the LCD
(which is a nasty task) - cut away a small portion of the plastic outside
pin 1 (cut at the bottom of the socket), so you can place the tip of the
soldering iron on the pin from the socket side while feeding a bit of solder
on the other side of the board.

You may want to vow to always solder IC pin 1 first on all ICs during your
assembly. The pad for pin 1 is round as a unique marker while the others
are square. Sometimes the eyes miss that single round pin.

Listen up! Where can you get a deal like the K2? Wayne and Eric have to
make a living too and the increase should have been more considering the
time period in which general price increases have foisted on us.

Consider the quality and performance and measure the K2 against what else is
out there.

Sure, it will affect the fixed income (I am one of those) as all the other
price increases we have seen since 1996.

K2 is still a bargain. I purchase another in the future if and when I
finish 4766.
