Hi Bill,

I think you've got a genuine hardware problem
rather than being transported into an unknown
menu setting. Does the MENU button work
at all?

Can you change the frequency display by
rotating the main tuning knob?

The K2 uses a parallel switch status polling
process to determine the switch states. There
are two banks of 8 switches, and the states
of each switch in a bank are read simultaneously.
I haven't measured the polling rate, but it's sufficiently
fast to distinguish between a momentary PRESS
and the longer HOLD actions specified in the operator
manual.

The MODE button is part of the BANK1 group.
If it's the only working button in that group, you
have a problem with the parallel load shift
register U2 on the Front Panel board either not
loading correctly or not sending out the correct register
contents serially to the MCU on the Control board.
>From your description it appears that none of the
BANK2 switches are read at all.

It is unlikely that the individual switches have all
failed. It is probably worth inspecting the
switch solder joints and related traces on
the Front Panel board to be sure that the
switches can be read. While it's also unlikely
that contact corrosion on the connectors
that join the Control board and Front Panel
board to the RF board would account for
the loss of selected switches, it wouldn't
hurt to pull those boards and carefully
reinsert them before delving too deeply
into replacing parts.

It's not difficult to separate the pieces that
make up the K2 Front Panel and Control board
assembly. Check the online manual for details.
It involves opening the top cover, removing 2
screws that hold the Control board to the
Front Panel board, then removing screws that
secure the Front Panel assembly to the rest
of the radio. The Front Panel board is pulled
forward horizontally at the connector to the RF board to
separate it.

If the issue seems beyond your comfort level to address,
you should reach out to Dave, W8FGU, who is the
legacy (K1, K2) radio repair guru for Elecraft. Dave
does excellent work at a fair price and knows the
K2 inside and out. His web page is https://w8fgu.com/

Mike, K8CN
