I've been using the Shure SM-58 for years and on several different radios.    It has a nice flat response between 100 Hz and 1500 Hz to cover the primary voice frequencies.  At 1500 Hz there is a gradual rise of 6 dB peaking at 4 kHz to enhance the mid-range, followed with a rapid roll-off starting at 5 kHz continuing on to 15 kHz.   The low end has a natural 8 dB roll-off starting at 100 Hz continuing down to 50 Hz and lower.   The frequency response is tailored for vocal use with a brightened mid-range and a low frequency roll-off.   The polar response is Cardioid having very uniform sound rejection off of the back side.  Also it has an excellent pop filter for excellent close talking utilization eliminating all but the worst pops of P's and huffing of H's.   It is easy used in both balanced input and unbalanced input configurations.

Just and old deaf recording engineers perspective of a very rugged good sounding microphone.

There appears to be a LowZ and HiZ variations of the Shure 444 available in
addition to the handheld version 404 and the 414. Which is appropriate for the
K3 (KX3, KX2)?

Otherwise, I like the idea of a ?communications specific? microphone tailored
for a good voice intelligibility on SSB and new ones appear to be rare,
specifically with published response curves. So many are mystery microphones
with unstated acoustic/electric details.
