Hi Wolfgang,

You could try an experiment.  Disconnect your K2, put it in a household oven 
(not microwave oven!) at 100F for about 10-15 minutes, then remove it and 
reconnect to your power supply and antenna.  Check the audio on 40 meters 
immediately upon finding a signal.  If that doesn't replicate the distortion 
you observed, then you'll have to wait.

I'll have to think about what temperature-sensitive components might be present 
in the VCO that would be affected on 40 meters but not 20 meters.  The 
varactors used in the VCO are switched depending on band, but I don't recall if 
40 meters uses different varactors from 20 meters.  I'll look at the schematic 
again.
