I've used both with my K3S. I didn't care for the sound of either one
for SSB. For AM, the 781 was better. The mike technique, i.e. mike to
mouth distance, is critical as proximity effects are very pronounced.
Likewise the mike on axis position is critical. Variations in these
two parameters will greatly change the transmitted sound. The
transmit bandwidth has TX ESSB set to OFF.
The profile I used for both mikes:
50 Hz -16
100 Hz -16
200 Hz -16
400 Hz -12
800 Hz 0
1.6 kHz 0
2.4 kHz +3
3.2 kHz +6
The bottom line, I sold both mikes in favor of a different microphone,
which I much prefer, being a Shure SM-58. My evaluation is based solely
on using a remote SDR, recording my test transmission, and then
listening back to my recording. I make adjustments from that
evaluation. I always get complements on my "great sounding audio".
I'll stand by that any day. And I don't have the pipes of Don Pardo
(SNL), Richard (Dick) Dudley (Voice of NBC) , or Jack Parnell.
