As to "rolling one's own cables", it starts with using proper connectors. A cheap BNC connector typically will be a nightmare to connect properly and seldom fits correctly.
Using brandname connectors (I myself prefer Radiall for BNC, for instance) will make the cable build job a lot simpler and result in a much more reliable connector. If you find you need tape to "fill up the diameter" then that is a clear indication you're using an incorrect or cheap connector.
American readers might comment "AMP" and that is technically true however distribution of AMP at this side of the pond brings challenges.
I don't mind sweeping my radio off the bench and have the drop caught by a cable I made. Making cables like this is a skill, and I realize it took experience to get here.
Also for "audio" connectors, brandname matters. I have thrown away "noname" jack connectors and prefer Lumberg or Neutrik. You will find you have much less "crackling contact" issues and find that even inserting the connector is a lot easier.
