Good Evening,
Twenty was a bit noisy with QSB. Forty was weak with QSB. Take your
pick :) However, some of the new procedure worked. Hail signs made it
easy to copy folks first time (if the QSB did not eat you up first). But
calling by the numbers needs a little revision. I think I will name the
five areas instead. How about 1, 2, 3 as NE; 4 as SE; 8, 9 as Lakes
(Great Lakes); 0, 5 as Central; and 6, 7 as West. The numbers did not
seem to translate well. But it did break the pileup a little at first. I
did have a few relays and a number of folks listening along. Thank you.
Now for better propagation so the procedures are necessary :)
It was nice to hear KA6LAF, Jeff Kinzli. You may have followed his
build on the Reflector. Well, I happened to be his first (and second)
contact this evening with his brand spanking new rig! Woo Hoo! K2 number
5945 is alive and well propagating signals from Santa Cruz to a mountain
north of Buxton, Oregon. There was QSB, everyone seemed to have their
share on 40, but I copied his fine fist as well as my feeble brain could
handle. I should not carry so much wood, eat so much dinner, and then
expect to stay coherent during the second net! But, the baked chicken and
rice pilaf with a green salad and side dishes was quite good ;) Makes me
sleepy though.
Minnesota seems stuck in a deep freeze. I did not hear from W0CZ so I
cannot compare his temperature with that of Bruce. I had temperatures in
the lower 50s as I was working this morning. By noon the bugs were
hatching out and during the second net there were some female carpenter
ants flying around my head and landing on the paddles. They were
distracting. Hopefully they will not hole up in the opening caused by the
flying hemlock tree. Willie,KH6NO/W7, was back tonight on both 20 and 40
meters. He was very strong to me on 40 meters but ESP or less on 20.

I was not hearing very well tonight due to an unusual QRN problem. I
normally can hear pretty well. Hopefully this week I can get my K2 on the
bench for a few upgrades. One of them is the audio modification. That
may help provide more gain so I can dig a little deeper. I know I missed
a few this evening who were well below the noise. Once I get my trees
trimmed and cleared I will teach my nephew how to raise antennas. Then I
can get one higher and get up a few optional antennas to use to change my
takeoff angle and coverage areas.
I know I will sleep well tonight. This morning was the first time in
two weeks I did not have my alarm set for 6 AM. I slept until a meowing
sound woke me up instead of the alarm ringing. When Sam is hungry he is
not shy about letting the world know of his problem! Being old and deaf
does not help me sleep. He is nice to have around though; keeps me active
and out of bed ;)
There may be errors in the above list. Please send me fills and
corrections. If you have any ideas what to name the various parts of the
continent please send those along too. NE and SE are rather boring
compared to Lakes, Central, and West. We could name them for
characteristic foods :)
Until next week stay well and stay warm,
73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)
