Hello Douglas. Take a look at page 89 of the April 2007 issue of QST. You can boot your computer into Linux using a 2 GB USB flash drive with Mandriva Linux on it. According to the article you can download the software free and put it on your own flash drive or you can buy it already on the flash drive direct from Mandriva. The download is huge...411 Mb. It won't be on your hard drive or interfere with Windows. I read about it but I haven't tried it. Take a look at the Mandriva web site.

Subject: [Elecraft] Station computer OS

I am considering changing my station computer's operating system from Windows to Linux. Currently I use Ham Radio Deluxe for station control and would like to know what Linux alternatives are available

The features that I find most useful are:

1) The ability to save and recall stations. I.e., I have icons that represent various ARRL code practice frequencies, the PSK 31 bands, and other settings.

2) Setting band limits. Using Ham radio Deluxe, I am vary unlikely to set the transmitter out of band.

3) Integration with other programs, i.e. logging programs, PSK31 and Satellite tracking.

I'm interested in what people are using for Linux, how robust the packages are, and what features they like most about a particular package.

Thanks !

Douglas Todd (KE7GYQ)
