Don,W3FPR just gave you very good tips to look at your problem.
Another one may be the BFO frequency not in place in respect of the filter bandpass. Look in the technical part of the filter alignment and see if your BFO frequency follow (at some 10th of Hz) the values given in the book. If you are in CW (normal) and if the BFO is on the other side of the bandpass you will not hear anything !!!
