Cliff,

A configuration I often use is to swing the paddle
around 180 degrees from how it is in the picture,
switch the menu to PDLr, hold the KX1 vertically in my
left hand, and send CW with my right hand. It feels
like an HT like this, and works well if you are
standing up and holding the KX1 in your hands.

I also have used the HAND mode to simulate a straight
key for Straight Key Night. You can then tap one side
of the paddle as if it were a straight key. This is
sort of fun and puts you in the shoes of the straight
key op on the other side of the QSO.

Also, be sure to learn the sequence to put the KX1 in
"button mode," in which the front panel buttons can be
used as the dit and dah sides of the paddle. (I think
you push the dial and the leftmost button at the same
time to get into and leave this mode - check the
manual.) Knowing how to do this without the manual is
a good trick to memorize. If you ever lose the paddle
or it fails, you can still send decent CW like this.
It's actually kind of fun and not hard to do. Just
one of the clever little features in this great rig.
