Thanks everybody for your replies, I have played with the shift and Hi/Low cut and although it does help, it's not what is should be. The radio was not used in a noisy environment, it is usually fairly quiet here. I will however have a look into the AGC settings and see if that brings any help.
I still think there is more to this but I cannot really put my finger on it.
