For all of you for whose interest in "radio" extends beyond QSOs on the Ham bands, here is a fascinating 45 minute audio program by Richard Dillman, "RD" of the KPH project and long-time "transmitter wrangler" (broadcast engineer).
http://www.radiomarine.org/IRT/ The program includes descriptions and audio examples of everything from the natural sounds one hears "on the air", to spy broadcasts, to secret "Sky King" messages sent to nuclear bombers, to the development and rise of the big shore stations like KPH and the story of one of the most famous KPH radio operators who went to sea and was torpedoed twice during WWII. (I first heard the Sky King messages late at night on radio watch in the 1950's. Hearing them again still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. ) The program originally aired on public station KWMR in Marin County, California (just north of San Francisco) where RD and others are restoring and maintaining radio station KPH. Be aware that the link is not streaming audio, but a 43 mB mp3 file for downloading. Originating here in the USA, it is in English.
