Hi John, I think your missing info on the K3 "CW-to-Data" mode function.
You can use data modes completely stand-alone (i.e., without a computer). Just turn on text decode, and send CW using the internal keyer. The CW will be transmitted as PSK-31 or RTTY depending on which mode you selected.
