Also, you might want to check your cable with an ohmmeter - the comment below caused me to recall a year at Dayton when I had to make up a cable in the hotel room - went to Rat Shack and bought a couple stereo plugs. Darn if both of them were bad, no connection from the tip to the solder lug, and these were new plugs.
