On my 3 flights from heathrow to Dallas Jan thro Nov this year they have been VERY strict on the "one item of carry on, which includes purses, computer bags etc" rule. This has resulted on one occasion of my 2nd checked bag containing only an empty laptop bag, which had customs at DFW examining the case linings very carefully!
