Phil, Adjust the mic gain until you have 5 to 7 bars indicated on the ALC meter, then add compression as you desire. You can use the monitor to listen on the headphones (just remember to turn the monitor back down to zero to use the speaker(s) or you will have a lot of audio feedback).
