I have a number of different USB RS232 interfaces, plus a four-port PCI serial card (of which only two ports work under Linux).
Recently I tracked down a broadband noise to one of the USB ones I'd been using to control a rotor. It didn't make noise when the device was in use, but if a program opened the serial port for the rotor and left it open, it would make noise. So it was difficult for me to track down, because only certain programs would open the rotor port and leave it open.
