Normal room noise? This is probably what masks fan noise for a lot of 
people.

In my house, loud noises are the dust particles crashing into and 
settling on surfaces.

I have thrown away analog quartz clocks because the ticking was too 
loud. And yes the motor noise in the DVD and VCR players bother me even 
when watching a movie at a good volume.

If there is lots of noise in a house, with furnace fans, or air 
conditioners, or traffic on the street, then it could mask a the fan 
noise from the radio or power supply.
