Different methods fail the 1st choice criterion in different ways. Instant Runoff (also known as the Alternative Vote, MPV & other names) fails it when it elminates the CW because your vote hasn't reached it yet. To prevent that, one must insincerely uprank that CW, sometimes to 1st place. We know how Plurality violates that criterion. Approval meets the weak form of that criterion because it lets you vote for as many candidates as you want to, giving each a whole vote. The candidate with most votes wins, just as in Plurality. So you never have to vote a less-liked alternative over your favorite in order to protect a CW's win. Mike
