Solved. I'm basically a Cadence fan and always trying to get a 
user-experience that compares with Cadence. So the first thing I did was 
set the background to Black. So, of course, that made the grid invisible. 
Searching the doc for grid, I found that there are buttons to tweak the 
snap grid - and that led me to wonder about whether the grid was actually 
displayed, but invisible.

So, once I set display preferences, it's all good.
