As far as I can tell from my Ubuntu translation experience, translation teams usually have extensive translation guidelines, which in turn use GNOME conventions as a base (see http://live.gnome.org/de/Uebersetzung ) There are also Launchpad translation guidelines for some languages (see https://help.launchpad.net/Translations/GuidesList ) I suggest sticking to upstream translation guidelines; they're time-proven and consistency is a good thing.
