All, I don't think this solves Jack's issue, as he does not want to boot into the UiApp every boot, but instead he is looking for a way to enter the app on select boots without first booting to the shell then exiting to the boot menu.
This is why I suggest trying to spam the '+' or '-' key to see if it brings up the boot menu before booting to the shell.
