My guess is that he means an intrusion detection system, a device that listens to network traffic to warn when 'bad stuff' happens.

Two network ports are used to tap into the network connection and a third is available for status output and other management things.

    having 3 NICs on the MinnowMax. Can you give me some details on
    what you would want to use it for? this will help me make better
    design decisions for the lure.....
