I agree with this assessment, I would not add any such capabilities to
the firmware, too many avenues for failure.
Any physical hardware watchdog needs to be able to be shut down by a
hardware jumper, otherwise debugging code is not possible...
I've encountered this issue many times in the past.
Sounds to me like you need a separate embedded cpu monitoring your
problem and have it push the reset button....Not most elegant, but clean
and portable.
