Hi Patrick,

Indeed that is how you should do it for the 0.5 series.
Alternatively you can go to Settings/Add folders, where you will be able
to select folders to add to the desired section (music, video, pictures).

However if you installed elisa from the package manager it is likely
that you got version 0.3.5, which does not allow to select folders from
the UI. My suggestion is that you use the packages from our PPA at
https://launchpad.net/~elisa-developers/+archive, you will get the
latest version (currently 0.5.12).
In the package manager, go to Settings/Repositories > Third-Party
Software, and add those two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/elisa-developers/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/elisa-developers/ubuntu hardy main

You will now be able to upgrade elisa to version 0.5.12.
