Think you're right about the vmXXX modules.

Still, it's now hit and miss whether or not I can get into X. If I reboot
the machine 4 times successively, I'll get to X-Win 2 of those times and
the other 2 times, my screen just hangs. Not sure why this is...

My best guess here is that you have other issues - maybe some form of corruption occurring.

The errors with the VMware modules is simply highlighted when installing any kmod package due to the scripts that are run, so any module errors will get flagged up. The errors are not necessarily related to the kmod you have just installed/updated (nvidia in this case), this process merely highlights the errors. There is a dummy testing kmod package called kmod-hellop in the elrepo-testing repository. I bet if you install and uninstall that package you will see the same errors flagged up.

I would try verifying and/or reinstalling those VMware modules.

I would also try running some memory and/or disk based diagnostic checks on your system. Have you noticed any other strange / unexplained behaviour lately?

Regards,

Phil

PS - a full reboot is always advisable after installing / updating the nvidia package.

Hi,

Some progress with this. I went to runlevel 3 and removed kmod-nvidia and
dependencies. I then rebooted and re-installed kmod-nvidia and
dependencies.
Whilst re-installing, there were some errors displayed whilst yum was
installing kmod-nvidia. The errors were:

Can't read module /lib/modules/2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64/misc/vmnet.ko
Exec
format error
Can't read module /lib/modules/2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64/misc/vmmon.ko
Exec
format error
Can't read module /lib/modules/2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64/misc/vmblock.ko
Exec format error
Can't read module /lib/modules/2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64/misc/vmci.ko
Exec
format error

I then executed init 5 and then typed in "startx" but I got an error:
Fatal error inserting nvidia
/lib/modules/2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86_64/weak-updates/nvidia/nvidia.ko No
such
device.

I then decided to just reboot the machine and I was then able to get to
get
into X. I've had a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and I can't see any
errors.
I'm just concerned about those errors that were generated during the
installation of kmod-nvidia.

John

I suppose those vmXX modules are from VMware.
