For ubuntu it is impossible (yet) just "compile and run" the module - since the system actually uses _another_ alsa - not from kernel, but from "linux-ubuntu-modules" (LUM). This is another version, built with key which has nothing common with kernel's sources.
You could investigate here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/204578 in about of the bottom of this page Marcus publishes the .deb packages for last generic ubuntu kernel.
