For ubuntu it is impossible (yet) just "compile and run" the module - since
the system actually uses _another_ alsa - not from kernel, but from
"linux-ubuntu-modules" (LUM). This is another version, built with key which
has nothing common with kernel's sources.

in about of the bottom of this page Marcus publishes the .deb packages for
last generic ubuntu kernel.

I think it would be much easier than to build it yourself :)

However - if you want, the steps are described here in this list (look in
august's 2008 archive).
