The thing that made me byte-compile was that wisi-parse-max-parallel-current 
didn’t exist. Perhaps I had stale .elc’s? I don’t remember any warnings, though 
.. but they would have been in *Messages*, could easily miss them if nothing 
obvious was wrong.

I did ‘make byte-compile’ as you suggest, no change to timings.
