Embarrassingly enough, my problem was a stale ,---- | (setq font-lock-keywords 't) `---- in my .Emacs (which I was even to stupid to find using C-s). Taking that line out resolved the problem; moreover don't I have any idea why it was there in the first place. (I also don't see why it does make any difference between 21.3 and 22, but then my elisp understanding is quite low.)
