Thanks all. Strange enough, git pull from repo.or.cz/r/org-mode.git started working fine once again.
But I cannot yet clone from http://orgmode.org/org-mode.git. I had tried the same earlier with the same result.. the clone will get stuck at "Fetching origin". My current git version is 2.6.0.rc0.24.gec371ff In any case, sorry for the noise.
