Thorsten Jolitz wrote the outshine library to provide something like this. Sadly it’s not actively maintained ATM, but I believe it still works fine, and it may be an alternative route towards the features you are looking for. The package is on github: <https://github.com/tj64/outshine>. It’s also available through melpa. -- Aaron Ecay
