a dirty hackish aproach:
(defun sr-no-link (href)
"Links, that are no links"

(setq org-link-abbrev-alist

;; ... many more ...
("dummy" . sr-no-link))
[[dummy:][http://gateway.example.org]]
It's still displayed as link then, but the browsers do nothing ;-)
