Well, I'm currently having a look at patching this, so this looks hopeful :)
I think I've got a mostly-functional `org-edit-latex-fragment', I'm just wrangling with `org-src--contents-area' complaining "Unsupported element or object: latex-fragment" at the moment. I hope to have more soon!
