This looks like a bug in ess itself. (defun ess-eval-region ... (ess-setq-vars-local (symbol-value (ess-get-process-variable 'ess-local-customize-alist))) ...) The above code does not work at all because ess-get-process-variable returns the variable value, not a symbol.
