thanks.  so it sounds like the adaptive fill function stuff might be
related to the jit-lock stuff?

in the past i have gone back and forth with turning off the cache.  it
is off now.

no warnings yet.

idk if related, but i am still getting folding glitches upon m-ret in
a list.  repeatable, but only in a specific context that cannot be
pared down and shared.
