Hi Jürgen, Just my .2 cents: I install my packages under ~/.emacs.d/elpa and I tend to delete that directory and restart emacs when there is a major upgrade in one of the packages. Just in case, since I have native compilation, I also delete ~/.emacs.d/eln-cache
That seems to limit the pain, at the expense of a slower first restart.
