That worked great! I needed to get sha1 and hex-util (got them from my CVS version of Gnus (haven't moved to the git version yet)) and url*.elc (got them from the ELPA package for url). Just added that to the Makefile (can't get a diff the easy way because vc-git.el won't run on Emacs 21, so good old trusty `C-x v =' wasn't available).
