Grrr. I bet I know what happened -- I used =M-x customize-variable= to try the setting, it worked, and then I added it to .emacs since I don't like the jumbled customizations at the end of my config. Being an elisp newb, I entered the value as a string instead of with the single tick as you posted. Thanks for the response to my user error!
