I guess that I am CC-ed on this because I handled the technical details of how to enable the minor mode `file-name-shadow-mode' by default. But I was not the one who actually implemented `file-name-shadow-mode' (Miles Bader and, for some part, Stefan Monnier). I do not know viper-mode well enough to solve this problem.
