So it's something specific to GNOME on this laptop.
Is it a matter of running under GNOME, or a matter of building with
GTK? In other words, when you run it under KDE, is that the GTK
build of Emacs?
Unfortunately, the comparison between the two machines is not very
conclusive because so many things could be different between them.
