You've said that you would expect my example to be "transparent to the
user/programmer". For that to be true, anything that uses a symbol
should have to search first in your special let-obarray and then in
the general one. Hard to see an advantage there.

Yes, but it depends on the relative time consumption for insert and search in obarrays.
