This has been a bug for a long time, but rcp should do a (let ((default-directory "/")) (start-process...)) otherwise if you start rcp in a buffer where default-directory doesn't exist rcp gives errors until you manually go kill the rcp buffer and start it again from a safe directory. -- greg
